Saxon Gladding Cuttyhunk Line Spool

This Saxon Gladding Cuttyhunk Line Spool special thread linen Cuttyhunk surf casting line was introduced in 1912 and was manufactured until 1934 with this particular label variation by the B. F. Gladding Line Company (est. 1816) of South Otselic, New York. The SAXON brand was continued with a different label variation through 1941. The brand name SAXON refers to a member of a Germanic people that inhabited parts of central and northern Germany from Roman times, many of whom conquered and settled in southern England in the 5th–6th centuries. The Saxons eventually became the Anglo – Saxons from which most of the modern day Great Britons are descended.

This spool and many others we have listed belonged to John Etchieson. John has spent decades amassing one of the largest line collections. The vast array of line spools and cards he has in his collection is historically significant as John has spent decades not only collecting, but rather researching these companies adding provenance to these pieces.
