Trigger Fish Antique Lure

The Trigger Fish Antique Lure was a creation of the Davis Tackle Manufacturing Company, Detroit Michigan. The lure dates to the late 1940’s in patent application and in production. This fishing lure falls into the spring loaded fishing category, where by when pressure is place on the top of the lure it triggers the spring loaded release of the hook.

The lure made of molded plastic may not resemble the real Triggerfish in looks, it relates in it action. The Triggerfish, one of the top on my bucket list to catch with a fly is a toothy warm water swimmer. There are over 40 different varieties of them and all are wonderfully colored. If its gnarly set of gnashing teeth do not discourage predators, it has another protection mechanism. As a protection against predators, triggerfish can erect the first two dorsal spines: The first (anterior) spine is locked in place by erection of the short second spine, and can be unlocked only by depressing the second, “trigger” spine, hence the family name “triggerfish”.

The Trigger Fish Lure came in roughly 6 different colors, #’s 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60. The included lure box paperwork describes in detail its features, functions and benefits.

TRIGGER-FISH is the result of much intensive scientific research. As it is common knowledge among fishermen that the natural habitat of all fish is in the weeds, we knew this was our first problem. Development and perfection of our Retractable Cluster Hooks made it possible at last to offer a truly weedless lure. One that could be used successfully in open water or weedy areas. To catch fish on any lure you first must offer the bait to them. If restricted in operation to open waters the chances are greatly reduced. Until the introduction of the TRIGGER-FISH the potential catch was limited to the number of fish straying from their weedy grounds to more open water where old type open hook lures may be used. With our weedless hook design, perfected and tested were realized only Step Number One had been completed. Our remaining problems of color, action, weight and durable construction were given full research to match the advance in design already incorporated in our weedless feature.

Contrary to what a lot of fishermen have been led to believe, it is action, and action alone that entices any game fish to strike an artificial lure. The wide range of shapes and sizes of lures which game fish have been known to strike only serves to emphasize that the one thing they all had in common was some type of action in the water. As to color they have ranged from plain overall patterns to multicolored designs with nothing in common but their uniform attempt to appeal to the taste of the fisherman instead of the fish. Most fisher. men have learned that it is very exceptional for a game fish to strike a dead minnow. As this is his natural food, and nothing looks more like a live min, now than a dead minnow we must conclude it is the action of the minnow or lure that provokes the strike and not the color design. It is now pretty generally accepted among leading authorities on fishing that fish are color blind. It would then be logical to conclude that the value of color is based solely on its light reflecting qualities in attracting th-e fish’s attention to the motion of the lure. As nature furnished all fish with natural camouflage coloring for self• preservation we decided against any natural coloring on TRIGGER-FISH. We decided on combinations of two high quality color combinations on each model TRIGGER-FISH to assure full attraction to the action of the lure. The only necessity for several models being the reflective qualities of light or dad:: models under varying weather and climatic conditions. This also applies for 2. of light-or-dark preference for day or night fishing. As the-color of TRIGGER-FISH is in the plastic itself there is no deterioration of reflective qualities due to to chipping of paints or finishes as on most lures. To use TRIGGER-FISH to best advantage under varying climatic conditions each fisherman should carry several or better still, all models with him to assure maximum results.

To obtain fullest Zig-Zag darting action regardless of speed of retrieve we have built in two air tight, water tight chambers to add buoyancy in the water. Thus we have lightness in action on retrieve with ample weight out of water to assist in easy casting.
TRIGGER-FISH is not just a irregularly shaped piece of wood or material with attached hooks. It is scientifically engineered and to close production tolerances heretofore unheard of in the fishing are field.

Choice of proper type plastics embodying such characteristics as toughness, impervious to normal heat and cold, constant color, etc., were important factors in the construction of TRIGGER-FISH. All interior metal parts are from stainless or rust-proof materials.

No special attention is required in care of TRIGGER-FISH. Do not oil mechanical parts. Do not remove Trigger-back. Should lure release mechanism trip occasionally when striking water do not be alarmed. This release is adjusted to proper pressure for game fish tripping. Even when released on retrieve strikes are common. Take good care of your TRIGGER-FISH lures and they will give you many happy, productive fishing excursions.

Note: Keep TRIGGER-FISH away from Gasoline, Oils, Acids and· Alkalies.
