Sure Catch Quiverlure
The Sure Catch Quiverlure is a antique lure of intrigue. Not much is known or written about this obscure 1930’s antique fishing lure company that I’ve run across. Fishing Tackle makers both reel and lure (More so Lure) companies would come in to existence and fade into the night in somewhat obscurity throughout the 20th century. Seemingly great ideas born of features functions and benefits to help the fisherman local or otherwise would succumb to industry, technological and the woes of the great fish god in the sky.
There are a few interesting breadcrumbs that help us take what we know of other companies to help trace back the information we can find or do know in a Hansel and Gretel fashion to at least get a glimpse. The Sure Catch lure company completed a trademark application in 1938 for its logo and design. There will be others spelled differently over time “Surecatch, ShurKatch, Shure Catch” for example which help muddy the water when trying to look things up thanks to the advent of Boolean Search. However keeping in mind the date 1938 and the location of the company, Irvington, NJ we get the base to our information pyramid.
The Quiverlure itself is a unique clear or semi transparent plastic fishing lure. The “River Runt” body style and shape has a hollow center, aft of the typical colored head. Lure body 3 1/4 inches long not including lip has a visible iridescent bar that rotates and shakes or “quivers” on retrieve. This version of the Quiverlure has a flattened area instead of the a-typical raised eye. The lure has two treble hooks secured with a simple screw eye hanger to secure its pray once caught.
Some rather large bread crumbs and leaps of faith. The Sure Catch lure company also produced at Lur O Lite beyond the Quiverlure. We see these two lures come again in history under companies again adding to our pyramid, but also to the confusion. Both the Dillon Beck lure Company (Located in Irvington NJ) and the long time Fishing Tackle maker WJ Jamison corporation will both market and sell the Quiverlure. Jamision would in the 1940’s sell both the Quiverlure and the Lur O Lite. The Quiverlure would become more refined with the addition of raised painted plastic eyes.
There is speculation as to weather Dillon Beck Worked for Jamison and then licensed these products thought Jamsion or weather Jamison bought the rights to the lures. Was he part of the inital Sure Catch Lure Company Im unsure, but it isnt a large stretch to get there. Both companies sharing the same town and same lure names and his later involvement with Jamison speaks rather loudly that there is something to this summation weve come to.
In summation, I would submit that the Sure Catch version of the Quiverlure is the original, that would later be markets under two different companies. The lure shown in the gallery below is shown in its correct box with great graphics. Ive had less than a handful come through my hands vs the many many Jamison versions of this lure. I have had oen that completely dissipated into plastic dust as some early Heddon River Runts do, so that may be another reason we dont see many.
