South Bend Coast Oreno Lure
The South Bend Coast Oreno Lure is a great piece of craftsmanship. This large big game and saltwater lure was a series 985 and was a trolling bait more than capable of landing the coveted Tarpon. The Coast Oreno in the Oreno Lure tradition, came in a few different varieties the earliest being with No Eyes. The antique lure measure in at 4 1/2″ in length, and weighed 1 1/2 oz. The lure came in less than a dozen color varieties. It was first produced in 1923 and lasted close to 20 years in the South Bend Line up. My favorite part of this antique lure is the giant 9/0 size hook it carries on its underside that in later models could be clipped into place. The hanger for this lure is of heavy duty construction and runs though to the top part of the antique fishing lure.
Some of the Coast Oreno cataloged lure colors were:
MS Minnow Scale Silver Black and Red
PL Pearl
Rain Rainbow
RH Red Head
RHA Red Head Aluminum Body
RSF Scale Finish, Red Blend
RW Red Arrow Head
SF Green Scale Finish
YP Yellow Perch
The 1942 South Bend Reel and Lure Catalog States ” An Excellent lure used exclusively for Salt water trolling on all coasts. Its grooved head give it the life like fast swimming action that attracts the big ones. Equipped with a patented swivel socket for a hook, which gives it unusual strength and durability.”
