Heddon Luny Frog Lure

Initially the Heddon Luny Frog Lure was introduced around 1927. Changes in material would influence the way Heddon of Dowagiac Michigan would do business for decades to come. Making a switch from the standard wooden material, Heddon would evolve into a colossal giant making artificial baits with plastics. It widely known that the original attempts and the product selected were a failure, however it would take less than a half dozen years for the bait company located in Dowagiac Michigan to find a viable solution.

The Luny Frog Lure has always been a collector favorite. While the lore of the Heddon Wood Frog still evolves and changes from each person you can speak to, for some reason it would take Heddon almost an astonishing 25 years to try to present a more life-like specimen than the frogs to which are credited with the inception of the company.

Model series 3500 was assigned to the Heddon Luny Frog Lure, and as I noted first made its appearance around 1927. Being the largest of the series it measures 4 1/4″ in length and tips the scale at 7/8 of an ounce. It had molded painted eyes, a double front hook attached with the toilet seat rig, and in this example a single hook coming out its closed feet. There are two variations of the legs one can find both shown below in the gallery. Similarly there is both a open leg luny and a closed leg luny frog lure. The closed leg is much more scarce to find.

Meadow Frog and a Green Meadow Frog finish were options for color selections. Later Red and White would be added to the color selection. The Model 3509 Frog can also be found with both the open legged variation as shown in the examples below and a closed leg variant where by your unable to see between the legs.

Heddon Life-like Frogs and “Frog” Finishes

Now you can fish with “Frogs” at any time of the season. No chasing them “the night before”, or being bothered with the messy lively little hoppers, because in the Heddon Frogs and “Frog” finishes in other popular Heddon Lures you can get a great variety of action baits. Many a fisherman has experienced qualms and hesitated to impale the little fellow on the hook and drown him slowly. The slogan of “Clean, Convenient, Efficient and Humane” properly express the Frog idea.

Late Dr. Henshall, America’s foremost authority on the Black Bass says:

The big ones prefer FROGS… It is generally known that a frog is the natural food of the Black Bass. At last we have produced an imitation frog bait which has all of the features that have made a wooden bait a success. First: It is a splendid caster. (If the fisherman cannot cast a bait out to a desired distance, he cannot catch fish, no matter how good the luring principles of the bait may be.) Second: It has an excellent swimming and diving movement similar to that of a frog. Third: The bait is practically indestructible, as it is die-cast from solid pyralin.

Made in the two most popular coloration’s, the Green Frog and the Meadow Frog. It is regularly equipped with a double hook on the
belly and a single hook on tail. Practically weedless. We have designed a double hook particularly suited to the bait, having wide spreading points which insure positive hooking when the fish strikes. An effective way to operate these Luny Frogs is to imitate the actions of a live frog. Allow your bait to strike the water and come to rest. Retrieve it by very short quick jerks which will cause it to bob under and rise again, allowing it to come to rest again between jerks. About the fifth twitch watch out!
