1931 Heddon Lure Catalog
This 1931 Heddon Lure Catalog has some new great lures presented like the New Dowagiac spook. We even get a great synopsis of the Rod with the Fighting Heart.
Heddon, – the Rod with the Fighting Heart!
Or, as Mr. V. A. Hart of Greenville, California, so expressively puts it:
“Heddon Rods sure have guts! A 44-pound King Salmon, swift water, a 5-ounce Fly Rod.
Time; 80 minutes and Rod good as new and straight as an arrow!”
“You are dead-right Mr. Hart,” we replied, “and the main reason is – the bamboo is “tempered.” Like the remarkable temper put into the famous steel of old Damascus by the armorers of old, Heddon has originated an exclusive process for the “tempering” of split bamboo. This secret “tempering” is in addition to
the natural loft-seasoning (drying). It adds amazing strength, springlike life and backbone, and increases easting force without “weave,” kick-back or tiresomeness.
This “tempering” also gives to Heddon Rods their beautiful Brown-tone color. It is NOT just a surface stain or dye, but is a new character taken on by the bamboo itself, which has gone thru and thru the wood.
“A second reason, Mr. Hart, is – all Heddon Bamboo is SPLIT- (not sawed as is done in many cheap rods.”)
All Heddon Bamboo is SPLIT – (NOT sawed), because in splitting, the natural grain of the wood is followed. Weak, “punky”, or defective bamboo cannot
get into Heddon Rods. It rejects itself in the act of splitting. This is one reason why Heddon SPLIT Bamboo Rods cost more than many good looking
“sawed” rods which are imitating Heddon in design and color.
All bamboo is choice butt-stock from Tonkin cane, the finest bamboo obtainable, because butt-stock has a thicker wall, finer and tougher fibre, and longer grain.
“And above all, Mr. Hart, Heddon Rods are strictly hand-made, with painstaking care, by rod craftsmen.” The famous two-piece construction of short butt and long tip on bait-casting rods was originated by Jim \Heddon, and brings the joint or ferrule close to the butt. This gives uniform spring and action, and prevents sharp strains from centering at any one point. This combined with Heddon’s careful graduation of taper, gives these rods the famous “progressive bend” vital to lithe action, strength and accurate casting. Heddon Rods are beautifully finished. Ferrules slip like velvet, and all ferrules are cemented on, not “pinned”. Pinning weakens the wood and often splits it, and makes subsequent tightening a difficult matter. Heddon Rods are scientifically built, for immense strength and service, with lightness and correct balance. With all their inner qualities and hidden niceties, they offer the very highest values obtainable in rods.
