Yelo Casting Line
Yelo Casting Line – YELO KASTER – Bing Crosby (1903 – 1977), the famous singer and actor, was an avid fisherman who loved and participated in the sport every chance he got when he was not recording classics like “White Christmas” or making one of his many “On the Road” series of movies with his equally famous co-star Bob Hope. This was his personal spool of YELO-KASTER waterproof Japan silk casting line that he purchased from Montgomery Wards (est. 1872) between 1939 and 1941 when it was last made for Wards by the Cortland Line Company (est.1915) of Cortland, New York. I was fortunate to be the high bidder and win this treasure from his personal tackle box in a public estate auction together with letters of authentication and other provenance provided by the Heritage Auction House in 2011. This is one of two boxed spools I acquired, and this one is still full and unused while the other spool just like it was empty as the line from it had been used by Bing in that 1939 – 1941 period.
