William Delany Fishing Lure
Like many in their day William Delany Fishing Lure maker began his trade as a Jeweler in the 1800’s. Many in the Delany line of Cobourg, Onatario made their livelihood in similar fields. While many know that William and William Jr were involved in Jewelry and Fishing lures, William Sr’s brother John & Henry his other son were also actively involved in making fishing tackle, duck decoys, and were gunsmiths. The main business for William and his wife Lavinia was at the 22 King Street, and its said that William Jr would continue to be a jeweler there until the 1940’s.
You’ll notice a theme with many of the Delany lures that uses both the crimping sometimes referred to as scalloping and the use of dimples as shown on this 19th century example below. The blades can be found in a few different finishes copper, brass, silver and nickle, and most all will be found in a oval type shape. The lures will feature both one and two blades mounted on a brass shaft and were followed by a standard size treble hook.
