What the Guide Said Bill Lambot; It is easy to understand the motivation for writing a first book. Everyone likes to think that they have a few good stories to tell. But what motivates an angler to write his second book of essays about fly fishing? A second book on a previously explored theme usually raises some questions.

In the mid-1970s, William F. Buckley, Jr. chartered a yacht, sailed across the Atlantic with some friends and then wrote a marvelous book about the voyage. A few years later he reassembled his crew and they did it again. When asked about his motivation for the second voyage and the resulting second book he answered, “The wedding night is never enough.”

I continue to write essays for the same reasons that I continue to go fly fishing. I enjoy both activities and both help me to see things more clearly. Those of us who have decided to not go quietly will continue to go fly fishing. A few of us will continue to write about it.

Fly fishing is an inefficient way to catch your dinner. It is an anachronistic, impractical, ritualized, stylized, fussy, expensive, hard to master, painstaking activity. Besides, the few fish that we do actually catch, we usually release. It is a nonsensical pastime that for a few becomes the work of a lifetime. We do it because we like to, because we can and because, at some level, we must…..
