Tight Lines Tuesday Bear Brand
by John Etchieson
Tight Lines Tuesday Bear Brand; Curtis P Brown, administrator of the estate of Howard C. Brown, doing business as The Brown Silk Braid Company, of East Hampton Connecticut introduced the short lived (1931 – 1932) BEAR BRAND silk and linen fishing lines in the pages of the sporting goods trade journals. While the Brown family had been producing quality made fishing lines since 1903, the BEAR BRAND likely failed to succeed due to the difficult economic times during that 1931 – 1932 period of America’s Great Depression.
To my knowledge the line spool label art of the BEAR BRAND is the only one to ever feature an image of a bear and very few of these have ever been found by collectors.
