Pflueger Archive Frog Lure
This Pflueger Archive Frog Lure is neat little unit. The only reference for fly eaters (Don Wheeler’s Frog Collectors Guide Book) has and shows a few versions of this Pflueger Archives frog. This Metal lure is comprised of two concave halves affixed together at the rings on both the nose and legs. This antique fishing lure is hand painted and this version has glass eyes. The lure features a single barbed hook attaching to the lure and exiting between the legs and a trailing treble attached at the belly. The Pflueger antique lure measures 2″ in length and had two feet acting as flashers attached to the legs via split rings. This lure differs to the ones shown in the book on page , as the others show different hook, eye and even material compositions.
As we have noted before, many manufactures copied or tried to assemble lures that proved successful for its competition. The book gives these frogs an estimated date of the 1930’s, while others suspect the teens. I assert that this lure may be classic case of experimentation, as a direct result of the Heddon Spoony frog from the late 1920’s. The old phrase of “Monkey See, Monkey Do” comes to mind with makers taking what works for others and adapting, and putting their own spin on it. We may never know the answer to this or to the many other lures that have surfaced over the years with the Pflueger Archives tags attached. The one thing I am certain of is that they should have produced this Pflueger Archive Frog Lure, as it really is a neat piece of history and a work to behold.
Lastly, I would like to add if you don’t have a copy of Don’s book you really should, as the history it contains and it’s use as a reference is well worth the the output. The book is and will be for a very long time, the most current, relevant and in depth piece of work based on our beloved fly eaters.
