Payne Humane Woggle Bug Lure
The Payne Humane Woggle Bug Lure is a part hook appliance and part vintage fishing lure manufactured in Chicago, Illinois. This wooden antique lure measures 3 1/4″ in length. The lure doesn’t feature glass or tack eyes, moreover, the single forward line tie screws / anchors give the appearance of such. This great example of a antique fishing lure was introduced to the public in 1915 and by 1917 was no longer sold. If you extrapolate that by total numbers sold, and then remove numbers still surviving (This is over 100 years old) , and then further separate them for the nice condition, you’ll too agree that the word rare is very appropriate. It is a rare example of a unique quality made lure that is extremely sought after by collectors today.
Famous outdoor writer Sheridan Jones wrote about the Woggle-Bug’s hooking action, describing the way the two O’Shaugnesay hooks break away from the spring clips mounted in the underside body of the lure. This was to make sure the fish is uninjured from getting snagged by other hooks, therefore making it Humane. The Woggle Bug also does have another down turned single rear hook, inset into the body, exiting from the rear of the lure. If you like the rare and the unusual, this Payne’s Woggle Bug would be an excellent example.
