Marathon Brand Fishing Line Spool
This Marathon Brand Fishing Line Spool is over 80 years old. This rare full and unused 1939 MARATHON brand braided waterproofed silk bait casting line was produced for just 3 year with silk imported from Japan and spooled onto this mahogany colored wooden line spool by the Marathon Line Company of Marathon, New York established by Jim Frye and Carl Hubbard in 1937. After 1937 the firm was moved to Homer New York where Carl Hubbard’s father-in-law was the president of the Newton Line Company and where Charles Briggs (associated with Newton) bought out Hubbard’s interest. The Marathon’s marketing slogan was “Best in the Long Run” which complimented the firm’s trade mark logo of a marathon running man which was featured on the line spool labels and in advertisements with the exception of this short lived version of the label on this spool that was used from 1939 – 1941
