Liberty Brand Cortline Wooden Line Spool
Here is a great fishing item, a Liberty Brand Cortline Wooden Line Spool. This 1933 – 1934 era LIBERTY brand medium hard braided Japan silk casting line was manufactured for the wholesale hardware and sporting goods firm of W. (William) Bingham Company (est. 1841) of Cleveland, Ohio by the Cortland Line Company (est.1915) of Cortland, New York. The graphic art image of a bass leaping from the water for a winged insect is identical to the image found on other brands of line made by Cortland in the early to mid 1930’s.
We have this and many other great line spools available by clicking below.

In 1922 the Cortland Line Company (est. 1915) of Cortland New York registered a trade mark for the brand name CORTLINE which was accompanied with the image of a rainbow trout hooked on a coil of fishing line. This attractive looking trade mark image was used during the 1930s (until 1937) on the back side labels of spools holding their Japan silk and Irish linen fishing lines.
This spool and many others we have listed belonged to John Etchieson. John has spent decades amassing one of the largest line collections. The vast array of line spools and cards he has in his collection is historically significant as John has spent decades not only collecting, but rather researching these companies adding provenance to these pieces.
