Fred Arbogast Tin Liz Sunfish Lure
The Fred Arbogast Tin Liz Sunfish Lure has always been a collector favorite. Long before the Jitterbug and its top water treachery would take the fishing world by storm this unique and simplistic lure was born.
Fred Arbogast from Akron, Ohio is synonymous with fishing on so many levels. Most people when they think of Fred associate him with the fishing lure industry. However this was Fred’s first dive into the pond, Fred was a World Champion bait caster. In the early to mid 1920’s Fred Arbogast not only won his way around the tournament circuit, he in fact held a world record for distance casting.
Fred like so many before and after him found himself creating a new widget because he desired something that was out there yet. You see Fred wasnt even a professional fisherman when he was winning all these casting tournaments, no Fred was like you and I, and was your average everyday factory working American who’s roots were dug deep in the American manufacturing machine. Fred worked for the Goodyear tire manufacture in Akron.
The Tin Liz Sunfish lure would make its way onto the scene in around 1927. What a beautifully crafted and painted lure, from the delicate details of the gills to the realistic use of the scales, the Sunfish finds its realism. Most folks think wooden with glass eyes when they think of an antique fishing lure, however, it doesn’t take but one look at this metal glass eyed beaut to convince you that there are other mediums worthy of that title too.
There would be a series of metal Fred Arbogast lures that portray different species of fish but in this post its the Sunfish that takes center stage.
