Black Beauty Brand Sears Roebuck Line Spool
This Black Beauty Brand Sears Roebuck Line Spool is a true classic. In 1936 the Sears Roebuck Company (est 1886) of Chicago Illinois celebrated their 50 years in business with a “Golden Jubilee Sale” in their famous mail-order catalog that had made them America’s largest retail department store. Among the fishing tackle items featured was this BLACK BEAUTY brand waterproof Japan silk braided casting line. The catalog listing noted that “Every fiber is waterproofed by special process” which was a manufacturing method used by the Cortland Line Company (est. 1915) of Cortland, New York who, in fact, made this line for Sears. The well recognized brand name for the black line came from the horse of the same name in an 1877 novel by English author Anna Sewell. The label featured Art Deco style lettering and design which was popular during the 1930s era.

Vintage Line Spool
This spool and many others we have listed belonged to John Etchieson. John has spent decades amassing one of the largest line collections. The vast array of line spools and cards he has in his collection is historically significant as John has spent decades not only collecting, but rather researching these companies adding provenance to these pieces.
