Bagley Balsa Shiner Lure
The Bagley Balsa Shiner Lure has always been a favorite of mine. Not exactly sure why, possibly because there were quite a few in my dads hoard of fishing tackle he left me when he passed. The Balsa Shiner would end up with two different names over its lifespan in the Bagley Lure Company of Winter Haven Florida tackle line up, the Balsa Shiner and the Pinfish. The antique lure first hit the catalog line up n 1976 and lasted for a few decades. Available in 2 sizes, the BS2 or PF2 measuring 2 1/4″ to 2 1/2″ weighing 7/16 oz and the BS3 a 3″ Model. Both Lures had the traditional painted eyes & two treble hooks attached via screw eye hook hangers. The Shiner Minnow came in a myriad of Bagley Lure Colors some shown below.
The antique fishing lure would transition from the Bagley Balsa Shiner to the Pinfish, and on to the Bagley Shiner over its lifespan, partly due to name conflicts with the Pinfish name.

Bagley Shiner One of the most exciting lures you will ever fish in fresh or saltwater! This darting hardwood lure entices with a hypnotic attraction. When retrieved with a jerking action game fish can’t stand to let this one go by. The Shiners side to side spurts signal a panicked bait fish in trouble. When a snook sees this. it triggers a ravenous urge. which the snook responds to immediately by inhaling the Shiner. Excellent over grass flats and for casting mangrove shorelines! The Shiner can be retrieved straight with a right wiggle, or with a jerking action. The majority of anglers prefer making the Shiner dance with a .. jerk retrieve … When used with a high speed reel (gear ratios such as 6:1 are ideal) this retrieve allows the full potential of this lure to be realized. Begin with a long, smooth cast: as soon as the Shiner 10uches water. engage your reel and remove any slack from the line. Proceed with a sharp. punchy. jerk from the wrist. Before this motion is complete. anticipate the retrieval of the slack produced by this action. As you retrieve your slack line, the rod tip should automatically return to its original position. You are now ready to complete the cycle again. but don’t pause-unless intentional-for the key to this retrieve. is to complete this range of motions in one continuous process. as rapidly as possible. When retrieved in this manner. the Bagley Shiner will dart madly from side to side. literally screaming “eat me” .. to hungry fish.
